Our Products & Services

Publishing

BurdaEducation is well equipped to manage every stage of our clients’ projects. Our teams use up-to-date hardware and software, including Adobe’s Creative Cloud: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat Professional, and PitStop.

We ensure that the software skills of our teams around the world remain current through regular training, updates and communication with our head office team. As a result of our dedication to quality, almost all of Hubert Burda Media’s vast German portfolio uses BurdaDruckIndia’s prepress team.

The BurdaEducation team knows how to produce books that are compelling and engaging for students and practical for teachers. Whether it be typography, text navigation or the relevance of an illustration or graphic, we have the technical know-how to help students learn.

Prepress

Prepress is a vital step in the production process. Our team of 40 prepress technicians at BurdaDruckIndia take a client’s concept from digital layout and proofing to the manufacture of print plates and the mounting of the plates on a press. Our presses in India are multi-million-dollar, high-tech precision machines that require equally matched human skills to ensure they perform. At BurdaDruckIndia, we spend as much time training and supporting our prepress staff as we do calibrating our presses. Every step of the prepress process of every project is managed and monitored in-house.

At BurdaEducation, proofs are printed for each project and carefully reviewed by our team, in close coordination with our clients. At every stage of the process we flag all issues for clients. This customer support ensures that clients’ books are perfected between the arrival of ready-to-print files at our plant and printing.

After clients approve project proofs, digital proofs are transformed into printing forms and/or plates.

Printing

Our state-of-the-art presses are located in Germany, France, and India, and can produce more than 200 million books a year. We print using the most advanced machines in the world, offering rotogravure, offset web and digital printing.

  • Rotogravure Printing
Using a cylinder onto which the images and text are engraved, rotogravure printing is the right technology to print high volumes from 100.000 to millions of copies. Rotogravure printing comes with the best price performance ratio when high volumes of copies are needed. In addition, different printing forms (cylinder diameters) allows to print different book formats leading to lower paper wastage.
  • Offset Printing
Offset printing is a commonly used technique in which the inked image/text is first transferred from a plate to a rubber blanket and then onto the printing surface. Offset is the most available printing technology in the world. Depending on the machinery different volumes can be printed from 5,000 copies to million copies. Good to know, the printing format is limited due to the fixed printing form. Paper wastage can be higher (compared to rotogravure) depending on the available size of the machine.
  • Digital Printing
Digital printing refers to methods of printing from a digital-based image directly onto the paper. We could say “on-demand-printing” as printing can be realized in a short turnaround time and even individualization of each print is possible by using variable input data. Digital printing is a great solution for print runs up to 5,000 copies, but it is important to know, that the availability of different paper type is limited.

Binding and Finishing

Binding and finishing are the key to books’ durability. At BurdaEducation, our binding and finishing machines are fitted with sensitive tools that detect the smallest errors. Binding quality is monitored at 20-minute intervals. Our polyurethane glues are specifically produced to withstand the high temperatures found in many countries where we work. We offer the following types of binding:

  • Saddle Stitching
This process gathers folded sheets of paper, one inside the other, and staples them, generally using two wire staples along the book’s spine. BurdaEducation´s binding machinery can produce up to 250,000 saddle stitched books daily. In general, saddle stitching is the right method for books with fewer than ninety-six inner pages.
  • Perfect Binding with PUR (Polyurethane) Glue
This technique uses strong glue to hold the pages to the spine of the book. It’s comparable to thread stitching for strength and durability and extremely flexible in the variety of papers and materials it can bind. Perfect bound books withstand extreme cold and heat.
  • Thread Stitching with Perfect Binding
This type of binding uses thread to stitch sections of a book to its spine. The cover is then glued to the spine. Compared to perfect binding, thread stitching allows the reader to open the book so that it flattens (with perfect binding alone, books are slightly arched when opened). However, production costs are double those for perfect binding alone as two production steps are needed (thread stitching + perfect binding) and it is more time consuming.

Training and Management Services

We are developing a range of workshops to assist your organization with all aspects of the book supply chain, including design (planning, financing, costing, procurement), production, and distribution. We also offer individual and team consultations, either on a project or daily basis, according to your needs. Some of the training and workshops we offer are:

  • Optimized Project Design
We’re experts in developing processes and timelines that will produce cost-effective projects that are completed on time. We offer training in planning, financing, costing, procurement, production, and distribution for book projects.
  • Developing Technical Specifications
We will train your organization to design books and materials with the most effective and efficient technical specifications, including layout and illustrations, pagination, paper requirements, printing and print file specification, binding and, importantly, the impact on cost of each of these specification criteria.
  • Procurement Process Support
We can assist you in developing an efficient procurement process, including process design, the definition of selection criteria, strategies to increase competition, strategies to improve procurement integrity, and the development of supply chain timelines.

Volume, Formats and Finish

BurdaEducation can supply a wide range of print runs, from thousands to millions of copies and different formats (book sizes). We also provide many options for print finishing processes and techniques.

What do we mean by that? Well, higher quality cover stock and heavier paper weights may benefit from UV coating. This provides protection from dust, water and dirt, making books more durable. If durability is not a priority for a particular product (such as a student workbook), cover and paper stock may not require UV coating. We have the expertise to guide our clients and best match their needs and budgets with print products. We like to say “if it’s paper, we can make it. If it can be printed on, we can print it.”

We want our clients’ journey through each step of the process to be as easy as possible. We want you to be able to focus on your core business and to know that your textbooks and TLM will be high quality, delivered on time, and on budget.

Paper

When we say we’re experts in paper, we don’t say it lightly. BurdaDruckIndia alone consumes an average of 40,000 tons of paper annually. Within that tonnage, there’s a myriad of weights, sizes, and qualities to consider when choosing which paper to use.

We’re environmentally conscious in our use and re-use of paper. We’re experienced in the use of all forms of environmentally-friendly paper and encourage our clients to use it, including raw materials acquired in a responsible manner, recycled paper, FSC and PEFC certified paper and papers made from recycled and recovered fibers. We offer advice on paper size and print options that significantly reduce paper wastage. In addition, we conduct tests of paper weight, paper opacity and brightness, color quality and binding strength according to international standards (ISO).

Pick and Pack

This the last step before books and TLM leave the printing plant. The core of this step is collating and packaging books and TLM. Printed books and materials are selected, wrapped, placed in boxes, sealed, and labeled. The boxes are packed as per clients’ requirements and prepared for distribution, whether inland, sea freight, or air freight. Our knowledge of shipping containers ensures we use “right sized” containers to reduce costs and minimize any chances of damage.

Delivery/Distribution

Getting books to their destination is our primary goal. Our commitment to our clients means we provide a transparent, daily schedule for every day from the initial order to the completion of distribution. We know where your books are every day and so do you. In 2016, we partnered with RTI Malawi in their field test of their track and trace system for the MERIT project (Malawi Early Grade Reading Improvement Activity) and we continue to expand our work on track and trace. We partner with multiple international logistics companies, enabling us to provide professional, reliable delivery worldwide.

Commitment to the Environment

BurdaEducation is committed to developing a book chain that does
everything it can to affect the environment and the world around it in a
positive manner. As such, our processes, products, and materials are
continuously reviewed for environmental impact.
